Botox and Dermal Fillers Q & A

How Do Botox® Injections Work?

Botox® is a highly purified protein derived from Botulinum toxin. The injections work by preventing certain muscles from sending and receiving signals to the brain or blocking impulses from nerve endings to muscles - thereby causing the muscles to relax. The muscles of facial expression attach to overlying skin causing the repetitive movement which in time may lead to lines. Examples of these dynamic lines are the “crow’s feet” at the corners of the eyes when one smiles or squints, or the “11’s” which develop between the eyebrows when one frowns. Botox® does not stimulate the production of collagen. Instead, its primary method of action is to release tension and encourage relaxation of the tissues involved, primarily those that remain constricted for long periods of time.

What are the Visible Results of Botox®?

By immobilizing certain muscles of facial expression, the overlying skin becomes smooth. The result is a relaxed, “just got a good night’s sleep” look. Others will comment on the refreshed look without knowing that it is the result of Botox®. A single treatment will last up to 4-5 months, and by repeated treatments, longer durations become possible.

How Do Fillers work?

Injectable fillers such as the Juvederm line of products and Radiesse provide volume and lift to the tissues underlying the skin. Different types of fillers are formulated to address specific areas, such as the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Loss of volume in the face with resulting deepening of lines is a natural part of aging, but by restoring lost volume, a youthful look is regained. A new product, Volbella, is specifically designed to restore fullness to the lips and erase lip lines. Another product, Radiesse, may be used to reverse the signs of aging on the back of the hands. Voluma is used to restore the “apple” in the cheeks, thereby lifting the mid-face area.
