Vaginal Rejuvenation‎ Q & A

What is ThermiVa®?

Thermiva is a state-of-the-art procedure designed to restore and rejuvenate vaginal and vulvar tissues. As a natural result of childbirth, aging, and hormonal changes, these tissues become more lax which can lead to changes in sexual function, bladder function, and the external appearance of the vulva. ThermiVa utilizes radiofrequency applied with a slender wand which tightens the tissue as well as stimulating new nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues. Unlike laser procedures which are painful and carry a significant downtime for healing, women undergoing ThermiVa experience a mild warming sensation during treatment and are able to return to normal activities immediately. Additionally, laser vaginal procedures do not address external laxity or sensitivity.

What Conditions are treated with ThermiVa?

More women are conscious of the external appearance of the vulva, and Thermiva corrects external laxity restoring a youthful appearance. Additionally, the procedure may increase sensitivity of the surrounding tissue as new blood vessels and nerves are generated, in particular around the clitoral area. Internally vaginal laxity may decrease sensation during intercourse, and relaxation of the vaginal wall supporting the bladder can lend to urinary problems. Mild to moderate urinary incontinence associated with laughing, exercise, or coughing can be successfully treated with ThermiVa. Urinary incontinence associated with strong urges and urinary frequency has also been successfully treated.

Vaginal atrophy associated with the hormonal changes of menopause can cause vaginal dryness, thinning, and shrinkage of the vaginal tissue leading to painful intercourse. While these changes can be treated with hormone replacement, those who do not wish to use hormone therapy, or those for whom hormone therapy is contraindicated, ThermiVa can correct the thinning and dryness associated with menopause.
